About me

Hi, I'm Jon. Over the years I've done many jobs, mostly in IT or electronics. My interests include Operating Systems, Networking, Communications and Software. Anything with LEDs on the front is also good with me.

My software projects have ranged from Windows front ends for military systems to software for Aura machines ! Recently I've mainly been working with web services and Linux based embedded devices. I tend to work mainly in C, perl, bash and some Visual Basic, in the good old days I was a fan of Pascal and Delphi.

For a number of years I provided freelance customer support for small and medium sized businesses in Somerset and Wiltshire, working on the road between offices. Since then I've been working fulltime for OnSight developing a Linux based CCTV security system.

Due to variable health I don't travel much, but I still take on work from home (telework) from time to time. Yes, I can create websites, on large or small scales, but as you can see it's better if I work with a graphic designer ;-). This web site is not an example of fantastic design or cutting edge graphics. I can write ASP on IIS, but prefer Perl / CGI under Apache.

I'm a fan of open source software, but it's not a religion to me.

I've had a vague interest in Radio and communications since childhood, myself and my better half both sat and passed the Amateur radio exam in 1997. Since then I've worked on a few radio related projects including distance WiFi links. For business use I've set up wireless LANs over distances of around 2 miles, for amateur radio I've managed a 9 mile WiFi link at 5MBit/Sec (~100mw into 12db gain) from my house to a local hilltop. Optical communication has always appealed but I've not had the time or money to seriously play, but one day I will. In the meantime I've had fun waving lasers around the countryside with like minded people like Patrick

I'm not artistic or musical like Dan, but I do appreciate dancers - female ones in shiny lycra that is... OK so I'm a cultural heathen. My favourite genres are SciFi and comedy, I'm not a fan violence or horror.
